Colour: Resene Trouble
“I took inspiration from Tokyo, being one of the places that Anahera went to and also being one of the places I’d love to visit. I also got inspiration from my colour Resene Trouble. I looked up the colour on the Resene website and these words came up in relation to the colour: Mayhem and Mischief!
By not going literal with the theme of my design by designing a modern kimono or any other traditional garment, I decided to go with what stands out to me with Tokyo and that is the city. Tokyo is always every changing and moving forward. This was the start of my designing process. I went further and looked into folklores and myths, keeping in mind the words, Trouble, Mayhem and Mischief. And that’s when I came across Jorogumo.
Jorogumo is a Japanese folklore about a 600 year old massive spider that can transform and change shape into a gorgeous Geisha. When she transforms into the Geisha, she lures men in and eats them. To me this story related back to the colour Resene Trouble and also the words that relate to it because she causes Mayhem and Mischief.
With my design I have eight straps to represent the legs of Jorogumo. The straps are attached to an oversized t-shirt style top so that whoever is wearing the top can change the silhouette to their desire.”
