Colour: Resene Buttercup
“Finding out that I had Resene paint colour Buttercup and a bright yellow silk sari was a mixture of emotions. I was very lost on where to start and what to create. Yellow is a colour I don’t think I would have chosen but I was grateful for the chance to get out of my comfort zone and the Resene Colour of Fashion project is the perfect opportunity to be challenged.
While reading Anahera’s story I was drawn to the idea of travelling and the adventuring she was doing. I think this stood out because of the Prime Minister’s scholarship to Asia. I decided to look into the cities she visits and I was really interested in the architecture in London. I found some breath-taking structures, especially Kings Cross Train Station, Canary Wharf Train Station, The British Museum, The Natural History Museum and the Tunnel of Flowers in Henry the Eighth’s Hampton Court Palace.
I saw a similarity between the architecture and honeycomb because of the positive and negative areas that these structures created. This really set the direction that I needed to take my look. I love the way these structures manipulate your views on the space and create depth; this is something I want to achieve with my look.
I was really intrigued by the way the strong structured lined weaved and locked together. This influenced me to design the boned corset bodice and lace up split on the skirt. I thought the cape would be a great way to add drama, structure and the idea of manipulating views on positive and negative space.”
