How to repaint wooden window shutters

You will need

Clean cloths
Old wooden shutters
Paint stirrer
Paintbrush
Putty knife or similar
Rubber gloves
Sandpaper
Sponge
Tools for removing and replacing the shutters, hinges and catch

Resene Ezyfill Quick
Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ready to use
Resene Quick Dry
Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom in your choice of colour, Mark used Resene Black White. Alternatively for a higher sheen finish use Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel or Resene Enamacryl waterborne enamel on the shutters.

To get the look: Mark also painted the bathroom walls with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Black White.

Other ideas: For a pale green effect, paint the shutters with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Soft Mint.

How to paint wooden window shutters

Step one
Remove the shutters, hinges and catch and then thoroughly clean the shutters using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner.

Step two
Fill any imperfections in the shutters with Resene Ezyfill Quick and allow to dry.

Step three
Smooth the filled areas with sandpaper and then lightly sand the shutters to ‘key’ the previously painted surface.

Step four
Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Step five
Carefully stir the Resene Quick Dry.

Step six
Spot prime any filled areas and any bare wood with Resene Quick Dry and allow to dry.

Step seven
Carefully stir the Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Black White.

Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Black White to the shutters, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Rehang the shutters and replace the catch.
