How to paint a metal gate

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 80

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need

To get the look: Mark painted the wooden gate post with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Other ideas: For a bright orange feature paint the gate with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Adrenalin.

Step one
Sand the gate to remove any areas of light rust or loose paint and also to ‘key’ the surface.

Step two
Wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Step three
Carefully stir the Resene GP Metal Primer.

Step four
Apply one coat of Resene GP Metal Primer to the gate and allow to dry. Clean the brush with mineral turps.

Step five
Carefully stir the Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Tomorrow.

Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Tomorrow to the gate and allow to dry.

Step seven
Apply a second coat of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Tomorrow to the gate and allow to dry.

Step eight
Fit the gate hinges and catch according to manufacturer’s recommendations and hang the gate in position.
