Corrugated iron fence

It’s easy to brighten up a tired corrugated iron fence using a fresh Resene gloss finish.

Paint a Corrugated iron fence

Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 64

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Bucket, corrugated iron fence (ours was previously painted with acrylic house paint), garden hose with clean running water, mineral turps for cleaning brushes, paintbrushes, paint stirrer, Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Sponge, Resene Galvo One, Resene Paint pot, Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, Rubber gloves, sandpaper, stiff-bristled brush.

To get the look: Mark painted the garden bench with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Woodstock.

Other ideas: For a lower sheen finish, paint the fence with Resene Lumbersider instead.

How to paint a corrugated iron fence

Step 1 Step one
Lightly sand the painted fence to ‘key’ the surface and remove any light areas of rust. (If there are any signs of mould, treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer.)
Step 2 Step two
Mix one part Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to three parts clean water.
Step 3 Step three
Wearing rubber gloves, scrub the fence well with the solution using a stiff-bristled brush. Rinse well with clean water and allow to dry.
Step 4 Step four
Carefully stir the Resene Galvo One.
Step 5 Step five
Use Resene Galvo One to spot prime prepared areas of corrosion and bare metal. Allow to dry.
Step 6 Step six
Carefully stir the Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Sponge.
Step 7 Step seven
Paint the fence with two coats of Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Sponge allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8 Top tip:
For new precoated steel, prime with Resene Pre-Coated Steel Primer before overcoating.
