Weekend DIY with Mark Rayner - Project 39

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, Fittings to hang shelf, Hammer, Old wooden drawer, Paintbrush, Panel pins,Pencil, Pieces of MDF, Putty knife or similar, PVA glue, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Half Sea Fog, Resene Quick Dry, Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Paua, Sandpaper, Saw, Screwdriver, Tape measure, Wood filler

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Paua.

How to build a shelf from a drawer

Step one
Carefully remove any damaged pieces of wood from the drawer and remove handle.

Step two
Measure, mark and cut pieces of MDF to replace the damaged pieces of wood. Sand smooth any rough edges

Step three
Fix the pieces of MDF into position using panel pins and PVA glue. Allow glue to dry.

Step four
Fill any holes with wood filler and allow to dry.

Step five
Lightly sand the shelf unit and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the shelf unit and allow two hours
to dry.

Step seven
Apply two coats of
Resene Half Sea Fog to the inner and outer sides of the shelf unit, allowing two hours for each coat
to dry.

Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Paua to the back of the shelf unit, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Attach fittings to
hang shelf.

Other ideas: For a rich theatrical look paint the sides of the shelf with Resene All Black and the back and background wall with Resene Pohutukawa.
