Step 1 Step one
Check that the vase is clean and has no cracks or damage. Then apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat and allow to dry.
Step 2 Step two
Choose your new base colour and apply 2-3 coats to get full coverage, making sure that each coat is completely dry before applying the next.
Step 3 Step three
Using painter’s masking tape, mask out some small rectangle shapes randomly all over the vase to give a fun confetti effect. Always remember to smooth your masking tape down so it is well adhered to the surface you are painting. This will help give you a crisp result.
Step 4 Step four
Paint all the masked rectangles in an assortment of bright Resene colours. Sarah used Resene Aloha, Resene Candy Floss, Resene Pursuit, Resene Sea Green and Resene Cupid. You can place the colours random, making sure all the different colours were evenly spaced apart, or you could follow a more formal pattern. Apply two coats of each colour using a small detail brush. You can wrap the brush in clear cling wrap between coats to save washing it out.
Step 5 Step five
Carefully remove all the masking tape. Make sure your paint is dry before attempting this! Don’t worry if some of the colour has bled a little, it is easy to go along with some Resene Zinzan on a small brush and correct any mistakes.

And there you have it! What was previously a boring beige vase, is now a colourful piece ready to brighten up your home. And it was so easy to achieve. Don’t be scared of combining bold colours; start small with something like this vase and have fun!

Upcycling for Good

You can find a huge range of treasures, from ornaments and picture frames, to furniture and toys at your local Salvation Army store that you can easily upcycle with a little Resene paint and some imagination.

"Our Family Stores are full of treasures generously donated by members of the public. We value these donations and try our hardest to re-purpose and sell as much as possible. We’re all about re-using and recycling, so teaming up with Resene on Upcycling for Good was a perfect match. Resene’s products and tips are a natural fit with our pre-loved furniture and accessories, which are usually great quality but could sometimes do with a lick of paint to ensure they fly off the shelves.

Each year, nationally, our stores save 16,000 tonnes from landfill. This initiative increases the value of the donated product, improves the range of goods for our customers, and furthers The Salvation Army’s mission and Resene’s community activity.” Gareth Marshall, The Salvation Army's National Family Store Manager.
