New Plymouth
As part of the re-development of the iconic 1886 White Hart Hotel and its Heritage Category 1 street facade, a yakitori bar, the Snug Lounge, was fully fitted on the corner of Queen and Devon Street West through to a newly created courtyard in the core of the old White Hart.
While the street façade has been fully protected and refreshed, the internal façade into the Courtyard is now a contemporary interpretation of the Old Hotel in opal white polycarbonate including a glazed sectional garage door. An original fire egress timber balcony on the upper floor was rebuilt as a large circulation area, dressing the new opal white facade of the building of slatted raw timber and offering a shelter to the Snug Lounge courtyard. This was complemented by a proper retractable cherry red awning within the range of the reds used inside. The red theme was part of the in the old White Hart and the original ‘red lounge’ was its apotheosis.
In order to create that warm, luxurious yet old fashioned feel, the spicy and blue based red Resene Scarlett on the walls was juxtaposed to the mysterious gold brown, soft, deep and iridescent Resene Soho in the ceiling and the dark blackcurrant hue, Resene Loyal, syrupy and smooth on all window frames and doors. Walls are finished in Resene Zylone Sheen low sheen waterborne paint and trim and joinery in Resene Lustacryl.
The reeded glass screens dividing the spaces into translucent intimate nooks were framed with recycled native timber from the White Hart. Some of the original timber lining were exposed and clear coated with Resene Aquaclear urethane. A neutral and elegant note, a hint of a Parisian white, Resene Zylone Sheen tinted to Resene Half Blanc, brings through the restaurant some breathing space and resonates with the black and white French butcher tiles used on the bar. Resene Merlot warmly greets guests on the bar entrance and outdoor ceiling.
Bathrooms are in sophisticated and dangerous Resene Enamacryl Metallic tinted to Resene Pure Pewter on walls, ceilings and doors, a metallic silvery hue with undertones of green, white butcher tiles, white porcelain fittings and old fashion pure pewter Rowe and Perrin porcelain taps lighten up by old crystal chandeliers.
