The Club Grandstand interiors at Riccarton Park required the existing green tartan patterned carpet to be replaced due to an accidental internal flood over a holiday period.
With the interiors last changed three decades ago, the brief from the client, Riccarton Park, was to come up with a replacement carpet option with a colour scheme to bring the venue up to a modern standard and contemporary style.
The light oak timber doors and skirtings throughout were to remain so the chosen colour scheme needed to work with the timber but be neutral enough for a variety of function themes or corporate identities due to its secondary nature as a function venue.
Working with Resene colours a range of options were applied to images using Photoshop, which the clients agreed to trial.
Existing off white walls were repainted with crisp black white using Resene Triple Alabaster. The existing ceilings had lots of 3D steps, beams and coffers but were all painted in the same off white using Resene Triple Sea Fog. To highlight these architectural ceilings, the vertical surfaces were painted in Resene Double Foundry to give modern definition and sharpness. This colour was continued onto the bar fronts and counters. Resene Tuna and Resene Galliano were added as extra accents to complete the paint palette.
While they were hesitant on how the scheme would work especially the Resene Double Foundry accent colour to the vertical ceiling steps, once completed they loved the new life, contrast and definition it gave the room, especially the ceiling. They then gave the go-ahead on the remainder of the interiors for the complex to follow the same scheme.
The green/red curtains were replaced with black/silver and replaced the existing olive green furniture with new black frame and black upholstered chairs which gave a modern look complementing the new charcoal ceiling accents.
The clients were hesitant to change radically as they did not want to upset their racing community followers. But once the clients saw the transformation they embraced the change and wholeheartedly welcomed the painting of more areas.
