Wallace Ward

Australia

An almost derelict structure is now alive with character and opportunity and bursting with colour, sophistication and heritage.

The Ovens & Murray Hospital for the Aged in Beechworth is of architectural and historical significance to the State of Victoria. This is due to its early association with the development of Beechworth and its dominant siting within the town. It is illustrative of the civic development that took place in the town after the peak of the gold rush, when Beechworth was emerging as the administrative centre of the north east of Victoria. The 12 bed Wallace Memorial Ward, funded by the local mining entrepreneur and parliamentarian, J.A. Wallace and designed by the architect Donald Fiddes, was constructed by Thomas Sandham and John Lyell at a cost of £1176 in 1890. The first ward built solely for female residents. It was financed almost entirely by a donation of £1100 by John Wallace as a memorial to his wife who had died in childbirth some years before.

After many years of bringing to life a multi award winning accommodation residence in the same town, the clients were not afraid of a challenge to rejuvenate this historically significant project.

Bold yet tasteful colours were chosen to complement in the living areas, with statement wallpapers teamed with neutral colours in the bedrooms and small rooms.
