During the first meeting the homeowners described their bach in Muriwai as an orange box with no toilet. The plans were to expand the orange box, add a toilet and a kitchen; which is where the expertise of Leanna Harley came into the project.
The orange box was perched high up on a hill with unobstructed views taking in the length of Muriwai beach. The panorama was simply breathtaking, and the kitchen space was positioned to take this sprawling view in.
The brief from the homeowner was to provide a kitchen with form and function: Clever storage and adequate bench space were designed to provide great preparation and serving spaces and encourage socialising to the adjoining living space.
The ‘Bach’ was to be a place to relax and unwind, yet be fun-loving and practical.
Having adult children, the kitchen needed to function well should large numbers need catering. This included the need for storage for large BBQ platters of food - the solution was a French door fridge/freezer from F&P. Gas cooking was critical to ensure cooking continued during power cuts.
The homeowner had very strong views on using environmentally friendly materials, so European Beech plywood was selected together with stainless steel for the benchtops. A strong visual brief was also communicated – consistent pops of colour were to feature prominently in the kitchen (and the rest of the interiors) keeping the fun and playful feel alive.
The colour palette complements the stunning view. The colours are visually light, fun, playful and bachy, with Resene Cornflower, Resene Riptide, Resene Sweet Corn and Resene Charlotte evoking feelings of sunshine, the sea, fun and ice creams.
A white glass splashback was chosen for its clean and minimal simplicity. Glimpses of the surf beach are often reflected in the glass. Open shelving offers a place to showcase décor items. Scalloped handles were all part of the look, showcasing the ply edge detail.
