colourful office

Australia

After moving into this 1950s house, the home office was the first room to be renovated. Working in interior design and decoration, lots of colour and light while creating a unique work space was critical.

As an advocate for bringing colour into homes, Leeder Interiors saw this as the perfect opportunity to show her clients how to think outside the square in terms of colour application.

Pink desk and feature wall

The brief was to create a functional office with lots of bench space and storage and ultimately not feel like a conventional office space in any way.

The space previously contained a window looking into the adjacent laundry, beige carpets and cream walls. It also had a built-in hand basin and an additional external door. The room was completely gutted, and an additional door built in, to allow for the new built in desk, cabinetry and shelving.

The office colour scheme was developed around the green vintage lamp taking centre stage on the desk. The pink tones chosen were the perfect accompaniment to the green lamp, creating a fun, fresh, happy interior, while also being the colours of Leeder Interiors branding. The green was further expanded with the addition of the small timber side table – painted in the exact tone of the lamp using Resene Blue stone.

Finding the right pink was integral to the office looking sophisticated and not too girly or juvenile. Resene Deep Blush, reduced 50%, and Resene Cabaret were pinks that were crisp, without any murky grey undertones, while not being too intense and overwhelming or too washed out and pale. The combination makes the space punchy and crisp and works well with the natural light and the Resene Eighth Black White walls. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is used throughout for a subtle sheen effect.

Initially just the reduced Resene Deep Blush was to be used, but once painting started more depth was needed, achieved by adding Resene Cabaret.

In the future, the floor of the office will be an engineered timber floor. However, this won’t be installed until the remainder of the house is renovated. As an interim measure, the Masonite sheet flooring was painted using leftover Resene Half Gravel from a previous project to finish the room. The grey colour tones the space down counterbalancing the pink and creates a concrete like finish.
