The client’s fundamental goal was to create a destination that delights the senses.
Be nostalgic; cast your mind back to when you were a kid. Stuff that’s fun and exciting – a playground for your inner child, let that kid out, it’s still there, screaming out for a burger. The job was to translate that into a rebellious but approachable local burger joint.
Element 17 took on the challenge set out by using unique colours, finishes and textures to give a backdrop to the creativity going on with the food and beverage. It was important to have an open kitchen to delight the senses and engage the customers in the whole experience.
Colour was going to play an important role, but in a subtle well thought out way. Not in your face - through art, on fixtures, fittings and places that you may not have expected.
With such a small tenancy space it was imperative to be innovative with the finishes.
It was important to be creative with the shopfront so it engaged customers walking past. Resene Kumutoto was the colour chosen; it stands out but doesn’t scream out.
Resene Kumutoto was carried through from the shopfront to the interior in a subtle way. The steel of the ceiling grid was painted in Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Kumutoto, the bathroom doors and joinery items like the hanging shelves over the open kitchen. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Gotham was chosen for the partitions above 3000mm and across the ceiling and as an entry feature. It created the perfect dark backdrop to the beautifully crafted timber bar joinery and enabled the ceiling to ‘disappear’ adding a sense of increased height and enhancing the Resene Kumutoto coloured grid. It is a simple and highly effective complement to the Resene Kumutoto elements.
A neutral colour palette was decided on at an early stage. It was a backdrop to the food – timber, Resene Black White, Resene Kumutoto and Resene Gotham. The use of texture was a simple way to add dimension to the vertical surfaces. Pops of colour and graffiti, and local styled art was incorporated to add the excitement the client was after.
The fit out design has created a destination for locals to come time and time again, a welcoming, fun space that complements the branding and burger creations.
