Tropical Retreat - Wanganui

This house was architecturally designed and built in 1976 and is constructed on five different levels. The section is slightly elevated to accommodate this type of build. The ceilings are various heights which gives a nice lofty feel to some of the rooms, including the bathroom.

The original bathroom had lacked natural ventilation and was very gloomy because of the positioning of the window. The bathroom is essentially an internal room with part of the upper wall looking over the bedroom roof line.

The bathroom renovation required a new floor, a false wall to house the custom built mirrored wall cabinet and recess shelf. It also required an opening skylight because of no ventilation to the outside. It also needed to still appeal to a family. As a small bathroom to fit everything in the shower needed to go over the bath.

The aim was to create the illusion of an early morning on a tropical pristine beach. White sand, sunrise, crystal clear water and the illusion of a waterfall and pools of water. The colours needed to be clear and crisp depicting a brilliantly sunny day after a clear sunrise. It also needed to have ambient lighting for soaking in the bath at night.

Bathroom renovation

The floor tiles imported from Italy were the first part of the colour scheme. They are two toned and on closer inspection contain tiny circles like light rain falling on still water creating ripples. The glass mosaic tiles at the end of the shower and in the recess on the wall were perfect for creating the illusion of wet rocks and a waterfall. The shower rose and bath tap completed the illusion with cascading water.

The wall colour was to give the illusion of an early morning sky. Five colours were used and the painting contractor rolled the first layer of colour over the ceiling and part way down the walls. The rest of the room was then sprayed in the balance of the colours until there was a soft colour above the skirting tiles which had no blue at all. The effect in the morning light is perfect for an early morning sky.

Resene Malibu was the first colour chosen and Resene Serenade the second, with a variation of colours between the two. The ceiling colour was rolled on first and part way down the walls then the other colours sprayed from the bottom to meet Resene Malibu at the top. The colours Resene Serenade, Resene Twilight Blue, Resene Onahau and Resene Anakiwa were not only chosen for their tone but also their names. This took several attempts to get right because spraying in a confined space was difficult and the painter needed to wait until the Resene Lustacryl paint had dried sufficiently to see if the effect was right.
