beach inspired beauty

Nestled under an ancient Pohutukawa, this deeply 60s home was in original condition when the clients discovered it.

With children now working, they were ready to move to their next stage of life. John Mills Architects were asked to transform this solid, but dull house into a groovy, open, relaxed and colourful home. No floor area has been added, but the entire interior has been re-planned to maximise the open plan living areas. These open onto a big curved deck which concludes with a bench seat under the tree’s branches.

The original flooring and stair were stripped back and refurbished, original wrought iron balustrades were re-purposed. New, bigger window and door openings deliver generous flow to outside areas on both levels. Skylights, shutters and full height doors were deployed to works some interior magic.

Interior colours were chosen to complement the views to the lush garden outside, the recycled wrought iron, selected timber surfaces and retro lights and furniture. Blue grout in the porcelain splashback echoes the Resene Escape blue feature walls while the leather Resene Sambuca brown and Resene Ranger green add a cooler feel to the semi-tropical location. Resene Escape is repeated in the bedroom. The TV and second living room features uplifting Resene Thumbs Up. All painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for a seamless flow from wall to wall and room to room.

Resene Escape can be seen wrapping around as a feature wall in the stairwell connecting the entry below to the open living area above. The calming blue colour is also carried through to the master bedroom complementing the natural coloured full height timber veneer door.

John Mills Architects designed all landscaping, joinery, colours, lights and curtains to create this warm, livable and enchanting coastal home. This has resulted some sense of wonder from visitors of all ages… and delight and pride from the client.
