Christchurch
The reinvention of the former Islington Freezing Works site into Waterloo Business Park was an opportunity to celebrate one of Christchurch’s historic industrial precincts – even more important now when so many of the city’s heritage buildings were lost in the earthquakes.
The provision of ample open spaces and streetscapes is a key aspect of creating an environment purpose-built to underpin the concept of interweaving work and leisure activities within the one site. Much of the design was inspired by the industrial fixtures of the early 20th century freezing works, and cues were taken from the extensive colour-coded pipe network and industrial infrastructure.
The extensive network of piping that ran through and between the many buildings of the Islington Freezing Works provided the inspiration for the wayfinding and landscaping scheme. Bright blue, red and yellow allowed workers to instantly identify the purpose and contents of each pipe. A similar palette of Resene colours – Resene Elvis, Resene Poppy and Resene Southern Cross – now allows tenants and visitors to quickly and easily find their way through the 114-hectare Waterloo Business Park, while also providing a visual cue to the remaining infrastructure elements that give the precinct its unique industrial character. A combination of Resene Armourcote 220 Epoxy Primer was topped with Resene Imperite 503 topcoat for a durable finish.
The blue-red-yellow scheme is repeated in the selection of flowering plants and deciduous trees found throughout Waterloo Business Park.
This project involved transitioning a former industrial site into a modern-day multi-purpose business and recreation precinct. It was essential that the heritage look and industrial atmosphere of the former Islington Freezing Works be retained and celebrated, while still meeting the expectations of prospective tenants for functionality and aesthetics.
