travelling the rainbow

Auckland

Completed as part of design studies, this project was to redesign the interior for an existing art room at Te Tuhi.

The existing art room has been predominantly used for art classes by young and mature students. The existing colour scheme makes the space feel flat and uninspiring and work done become a chore rather than motivational.

Te Tuhi

Redesigning the interior creates a bright, fun and creative space to encourage creativity and broaden imaginations. We all fell in love with rainbows as kids, so it was decided to use this as the interior theme.

When students first enter the room they are greeted by a rainbow tunnel, painted in Resene Suzie Q, Resene Energise, Resene Headlights, Resene Limerick, Resene Hope, Resene Point Break and Resene Tempt. By entering the tunnel a student is then ‘transported’ from an ‘ordinary universe’ to a ‘magical universe’, a metaphor for the transition from outside to inside whereby the boundaries of their creativity and imagination can be stretched. When a student exits the tunnel the existing art class suddenly opens up into a bright open space.

White and grey are used as primary colours on the walls and ceiling, in Resene Black White and Resene Triple Concrete, to reflect as much natural sunlight as possible. This was to ensure the students get as much natural unfiltered light as possible in their working spaces. The main display wall at the end of the class is kept grey to enhance the custom made colour wheel clock on the wall and colourful drying racks.
