Matarangi bach

Matarangi

These colours are reminiscent of the Coromandel coastline – up the Thames coast and over the hills, with waves breaking on the beaches, the ever changing colours of the sky and the islands in the distance in the deeper shades.

This bach is a 17-year-old Initial home with timber interior walls. The owners immediately loved the layout with its open plan living; it felt spacious from the outset despite having only two bedrooms.

Painting all the timber walls in Resene Half Sea Fog let the light flood in and has utterly transformed the bach from a dark space to light, bright and airy with a very relaxed, coastal feel.

Keen to retain the bach’s original simple aesthetic was achieved by keeping furnishings to a minimum and making over the existing kitchen and bathroom with paint and accessories, rather than replacing them.

As a bach for a family of seven, the paints, finishes and furnishings needed to be durable to stand the test of time. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen and Resene Lustacryl provided hard wearing, wipeable paint surfaces that would take the knocks from the children. Other finishes such as the timber look vinyl flooring and dark grey flecked wool carpet are hard wearing, easy to clean and hide the sand.

The striped feature wall in the dining room is a focal point and a favourite element of the bach. The colours on the dining room feature wall provided the inspiration for the rest of the colour scheme and led to all the furnishings throughout the bach – this achieves a cohesive look and helps to create a very restful, calm space.

Bach accessories

These colours are reminiscent of the Coromandel coastline – up the Thames coast and over the hills, with waves breaking on the beaches, the ever changing colours of the sky and the islands in the distance in the deeper shades. The seven colours are repeated twice on the wall in this order – Resene Jet Stream, Resene Carefree, Resene Cut Glass, Resene Half Sea Fog, Resene Nebula, Resene Longitude and Resene Dusted Blue. The dining table and chairs were also upcycled by painting them with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in Resene Half Sea Fog and Resene Dusted Blue, to bring them into the colour palette.

The logistics of getting everything including all the furniture from Auckland to Matarangi on a relatively small trailer, 15-20 trips in all, was quite a challenge. Scheduling the tradespeople needed to lay flooring, fit new lights and install the dishwasher and outdoor shower required meticulous forward planning.
