Old Before Its Time! Here’s a short ‘how to’ on creating an aged sign from Rowan Kyle in Napier. Get a piece of ply wood, cut to the required size and paint it a base colour. This colour will be what shows through when the sign crackles. I tend to put two coats on because you don’t want the timber to absorb the crackle paste as this causes it not to work so well. Once your second base coat is completely dry, coat your panel with Resene Crackle. The key to this is the thicker the coat - the larger the cracks, the thinner the coat - the smaller the cracks. The cracks will appear in the direction you lay the paste on. I have brushed both horizontal and vertical so I get cracks forming both ways. As the paint dries the crackle will start to appear. Once you have your base coats on and dry it’s time to mark out your sign. I have made a pattern for this sign. Rub charcoal on the back then tape the pattern to the sign panel, go over your pattern with a pen and it will leave charcoal lines on your sign panel ready for hand lettering. Now the fun part, start hand lettering all of your sign. Don’t worry if the paint coverage isn’t that great as you will be sanding it back to look aged later so one coat in each colour is fine. Finished lettering. Now it is time to attack you sign with sand paper to age it, you can go as little or as hard as you like depending on how weathered you want it to look. Now the sign is finished but to make it really POP I like to frame my signs; I use the same ageing technique on the frame as I do with the sign panel. Signwriter: Rowan Kyle |
