It dries to a subtle, textured finish and is suitable for use over primed plasterboard, concrete and other cementitious surfaces. Foundation Coat can be applied using different techniques and application styles to create unique finishes, including concrete and plaster effects. The finish is durable and suitable for interior and exterior use.
Ensure the surface is in sound condition, dry and free from dirt, dust, loose material, oils and other contaminants. If moss and mould are present, treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer (refer to label instructions and Data Sheet D80). Before applying any further coating, ensure the surface is clean and dry.
If the wall is new, seal or prime before you begin.
Clean down previously painted walls using solution of Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner (interior) or Resene Paint Prep and Housewash (exterior).
For repaints, thoroughly scrape and sand to remove any weakly adhering or flaking paint and to provide a key for good adhesion.
Fill cracks, holes and voids with an appropriate filler after priming.
Mask joinery and light switches etc. to prevent any paint splatter from the brush or roller. Ensure flooring is protected with drop sheets.
Refer also to Resene Surface Information and Preparation Data Sheet (SIPDS) for Interior Wallboards, and Concrete as appropriate.

Resene MyArtisan Foundation Coat can be applied by brush, PAL No. 7 roller sleeve, a combination of the two, or by spray.
There are many looks that can be created with a variety of application techniques. Below we cover two of the most popular looks; a smooth textured finish and a crow's foot brushed finish (also called cross hatch). Once dry, you can leave it as is or use it as a base for colour washing or creative effects.
For a smooth, even textured finish, which will replicate the look of sponge finished plaster and renders, or as a base for metallic and Rust Effects from the MyArtisan FX range, apply an anchor-coat by brush and roller at approximately 8-10 m2 per litre. Once dry, apply a full coat by brush and roller at approximately 6-8 m2 per litre.
For a 'Crow's foot' or 'Cross-hatch' brushed finish, apply an anchor coat at approximately 8- 10 m2 per litre. Once dry, apply Resene MyArtisan Foundation Coat using a large brush and the Crows Foot technique. For larger walls or to create a 'Crow's foot' texture, work with a partner; one person rolls while the other uses a large brush to add texture and movement.
If you'd like to add more flair to the subtle finish of the above options, continue layering with colour washes or Resene FX Faux Rust Effect paint for more contrast and detail.
