Positioned within a three-sided glass box, the formal dining room at the Elephant Estate Winery is painted in Resene colours that were chosen to form a backdrop to the picturesque view.
Framing a slice of the view creates a real sense of visual drama. It’s a technique that has been used to good effect in the formal dining room at the Elephant Estate Winery in Te Awanga, Hawkes Bay.
Walls and ceilings in this room are painted in Resene Tea and Resene Alabaster.
To further enhance the scenic outlook, architect John Blair partially enclosed the room within a three-sided glass box. The sculptural appeal of the room is reinforced by near-invisible supports that make the table look as though it is suspended in midair, and by a textured grass-like rug.
A neutral backdrop also helps ensure the view is the centre of attention. Part of the ceiling and the walls are painted in Resene Tea, a warm neutral shade reminiscent of river boulders. The main section of ceiling is painted in Resene Alabaster, a near white with a hint of light black. Both these shades are from The Range Whites & Neutrals fandeck, a collection of 360 hues from white through to black.
Karen Warman, marketing manager at Resene, says Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is recommended for such broadwall areas.
“Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen waterborne enamel is an Environmental Choice-approved paint that is highly durable and easy to clean, so the paint finish looks good for longer.”
