Be inspired by winter 2018 colour trends

Something blue

Keeping it charming, cosy and oh-so-modern, the feature of this living room is the triangular patterned wall created with (from top) Resene Indian Ink, Resene Athens Grey and Resene Atmosphere. While triangles are a simple feature wall effect, the structure, scale and colours of these triangles keeps the treatment from being overly cliche. A velvet armchair and deep blue patterned rug warms up the look, with a benchseat used as a shelf and painted in Resene Blue Night – perfect to stack mid-century modern-inspired vases, decorative plants and the latest reads on architecture and interior inspiration. The floor is painted in Resene Stack.

Use soft, textural throws and warm greys for cosiness.

Other colours to try with deep blue – stark off-whites, camel tans and moody grey blues...

Red mellows out

Deep wine red is a colour of the moment. Some call it burgundy but in this room, Resene Pohutukawa has the mood and look of a mellow vintage wine. A part circle is painted on the wall in Resene Dust Storm to act as a headboard, like the setting sun, or a rising moon. The combination of wine red and soft pink might be feminine but in this case, it’s also very sophisticated. A floor in the antique white Resene Double Rice Cake balances the richness of the wall colours. The circular motif of the headboard is echoed in an off-set artwork, the Edison-style light, and velvet cushion. Who wouldn’t want to lay down to rest in this room?

This colour combo cries out for a floral theme using overblown roses and peonies.

Other colours to try with wine red – classic creams, lavender greys and dusty browns...

Go for gold

Feature walls don’t have to be floor to ceiling affairs. Why not pick a bold colour that you love or, like we have here, match it to a key piece of furniture and create a block of beautiful colour? For this lounge, Resene Hot Toddy, a delicious whisky gold, was matched to the luxe velvet sofa. With the rest of the wall painted in Resene Delta, the look is a little bit retro with a whole lot of glam. The floor is painted to add tonal depth, in Resene Nero, while the coat stand is Resene Double Gravel, the peg stool and coffee table top are in Resene Half Gravel, the coffee table legs are in Resene Double Merino.

Use texture to enliven the drama of a punchy monochromatic scheme.
