From habitat highlights - issue 41, do in a day
Four fast, simple and effective decorating ideas to upgrade your seating.
Resene paints, stains and testpots are some of the most versatile tools in your home makeover kit. To show the big impact you can make by using a few favourite Resene colours, we took four different seating options and gave them a creative paint facelift.
Summer stripes: This chair is painted in Resene Quarter Silver Chalice with stripes in Resene Element. The V groove wall is in Resene Silver Chalice. The decking is stained in Resene Woodsman Natural. The stump table is Resene Element. The round planter, book cover and tumbler are Resene Iko Iko and the larger planter and small dish are Resene Armadillo. Plants from Kings Plant Barn.
Bold bar stools: These stool tops are painted in Resene Quarter New Denim Blue, Resene Half Innocence, Resene Duck Egg Blue, Resene Spanish Green, Resene Haven and Resene Secrets with one section stained in Resene Colorwood Natural. The floor is washed with Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy and the wall is Resene Half Rice Cake. Stool tops finished in Resene Aquaclear.
A chair for everyone: These chair seats and backs are painted in Resene Diesel then finished with Resene Aquaclear. The words are painted in Resene Teak. The floor is washed with Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy and the wall is Resene Half Rice Cake.
Adding a few smart contrast stripes to a classic Cape Cod chair lends sophistication and flair. Try different width stripes and a colour palette that complements your home’s exterior.
Wooden seat tops are a good canvas for creativity. Geometric designs can be easily masked up or try stencils to create a more intricate look. Use masking tape for multi-colour designs to get crisp edges between colours. Allow to dry between coats and colours.
Personalised designs are a fun idea for the kids and other family members. Stencilled letters or designs are the simplest way to create a fun look for everybody.
Try a colour theme for dining chairs rather than a single shade. Keep one part of each chair the same colour so they still look like a set. We've opted for soft sorbet shades, but you could try a gradient of greens or blues, or on wood chairs, experiment with different washes from the Resene Colorwood We Speak Beach range.
