A New Scheme

Interiors – from Latitude magazine

Whether you have renovated or built a new home, perfecting your colour scheme is a huge undertaking, but one that doesn’t have to be daunting. Resene Colour Consultant Honor Moore offers some advice on where to start.

When it comes to piecing together that perfect colour scheme for your new home, the best piece of advice you can get is to not overthink it. Visit show homes, browse online – try websites like habitat by resene, pull pages from magazines and build a collection of photos and pictures that draw you in or make you feel good. A common theme will start to emerge that you can then build on.

Consider your pictures. Are you drawn to an uplifting and energetic aesthetic, a calm and relaxing vibe, or maybe a mixture of both? Do you sway towards brown tones or grey? Pure whites or creams?

If you aren’t sure which colours are making your heart sing, try uploading one of your favourite photos from your inspiration collection to the online Resene Colour Palette Generator, which will give you a suggested colour palette to help get you started.

Once you have identified which colours, tones and shades appeal to you, begin with your permanent surfaces such as your benchtop, carpet, flooring, exterior roof and joinery colour, as these tend to offer the least number of colour choice options and will give you a base from which to build.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to push the boundaries, to get creative and have fun. At the end of the day it is only paint and wallpaper – you can always try something new next season!

Testpot tip:

When using a Resene testpot always paint two coats onto a very large piece of white card (we suggest A2 in size) leaving an unpainted border around the edge. The border helps you see the true colour without being distracted by the existing colour on your walls.

Move it around the area you plan to paint so that you can see how it looks at different times of the day and night.

Also try rolling the painted sample so the colour is innermost and look down into it. This will give you an idea of how the colour will multiply if it is used on all walls.

Resene Colour Consultant Honor Moore is passionate about the difference colour, paint and wallpaper can make to a home. If you have a paint, colour or wallpaper query, visit your Resene ColorShop for expert advice, or book an appointment with a Resene Colour Expert online.
