Painted Creativity

Interiors – from Latitude magazine

We get helpful advice and inspiration from Resene Color Consultant Honor Moore when it comes to DIY projects with paint.

Painted wall.

Do you have any tips when it comes to painting old timber furniture?

You can easily refresh tired, timber furniture with a few coats of paint. If your timber furniture has a varnish on it, simply give it a light sand and apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer.

This will help the topcoats to stick onto difficult surfaces so you can paint your favourite Resene colours with ease. If you’re working with bare timber, a light sand and prime with Resene Quick Dry and you’ll be ready to go! Once you have prepared your furniture, use either Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss or Resene Enamacryl gloss as a topcoat.

How can I add a wow factor on a budget?

Did you know, the higher the sheen level used, the bolder your colour looks? Resene Enamacryl gloss is a fantastic product for intensifying colours and making them pop. Feature front doors look very striking in Resene Enamacryl gloss and all you’ll need is a litre of paint! For a sharp, sophisticated front door try Resene Nero, or for a bright, burst of joy try bright colours such as Resene I Dare You and Resene Hive.

Can I use Resene testpots to paint terracotta pots?

Absolutely! I encourage you to experiment with as many colours and patterns as possible. Make sure to seal your terracotta pots inside and out with Resene Terracotta Sealer first to ensure longevity. For a little extra bling try Resene FX Metallic testpots too.

Are feature walls an easy DIY and are they still popular?

Feature walls are still popular, and they often display much more than a single block of colour. Let your imagination run wild and experiment with a variety of paint effects, wallpapers, colours, patterns and textures. The key is to use the right accessories to make sure your feature is a success. I always gravitate towards the purple and yellow Washi Sellotape available at Resene ColorShops for super sharp painted lines.

Resene Colour Consultant Honor Moore is passionate about the difference colour and paint can make to a home. If you have a paint, colour or wallpaper query, visit your Resene ColorShop for expert advice, or book an appointment with a Resene Colour Expert online.
