A classic blue and white colour scheme gives this kitchen beachin’ good looks.
Jan and Bill had just one requirement for their new kitchen – don’t block the sea views. A balance of dusty blues and soft Resene whites were just the ticket to complement but not overwhelm the stunning Kāpiti Coast scenery surrounding their family beach house.
Jan worked closely with interior designer Vanessa Webb from Dress My Nest in Kāpiti and Mastercraft Kitchens designer Amber Downie to create the classic Hamptons finish she was looking for.
It all started with Resene Dusted Blue, which Jan had already used in an earlier project in the house, refurbishing a bathroom. “It’s a very calming colour, so when I was thinking of my kitchen, I was immediately drawn to that grey-blue,” she says.
That formed the basis of her brief to Amber for a beachy Hamptons style, along with tongue-and-groove timber accents and glazed reed glass doors on the cabinets that not only add plenty of storage but also bounce dappled light around the space beautifully, making the space feel lighter and larger. The abundant use of green-toned white Resene Half Rice Cake on cupboards and cabinets also makes the space feel bright and spacious.
Making the most of those views and being able to enjoy them from the kitchen island was an important influence over the design. “Before the renovations, I always stood at the bench to prepare meals because whenever you look up you can cast your eye out to the ocean and along the beach sand dunes,” Jan says. “It was essential to me that I didn’t lose that.”
The reeded glass cabinet helps bounce dappled light around the coastal kitchen, creating texture and softness. The window seat and cabinetry are painted in Resene Half Rice Cake and the benchtop is American Oak.
One of Jan’s favourite features is the window seat, which works beautifully to connect the living and dining areas – and is always popular with visitors who can relax and chat while Jan is working in the kitchen.
“I had always wanted a window seat in this space,” Jan says. “I use it as a relaxing and reading space. Our six grandchildren also love sitting up on the window seat doing Lego or drawing at the dining table. It’s a great family space.”
Top tip: Use the Resene Kitchen & Bathroom paint range formulated with anti-bacterial silver and MoulDefender to keep your kitchen finish looking good.
What is your favourite part of the kitchen?
Jan: I love being able to look up and enjoy the views when I’m working in the kitchen.
What’s your cooking style?
Jan: Until earlier this year, I was working long full-time hours so my cooking style was definitely quick but 'wholesome'. I always opted for a quick but tasty meal, but, especially if I’m entertaining, it has a touch of creativity and flair in presentation. With more time on my hands, I’ll become even more creative!
What are you most looking forward to making from this issue of dish?
Jan: Finger-lickin’ Smoky Garlic and Chilli Prawns. Yum!
