Colour trends from NZ House and Garden magazine
Interpret a timeless pattern in paint.
As summer approaches, there’s a pattern that many of us love – call it cottage style or picnic table chic but there’s no denying the resurgence of gingham’s popularity. True followers of the checkerboard trend might use a strict palette of black and white, or go pretty with pastel Resene colours but for a more sophisticated take, nothing beats duck egg blue and raffia-toned neutrals. These colours are, of course, a perfect reflection of our coastline and beaches, where golden sands and grasses contrast with the soft grey-blues of the ocean. Rather than use fabric to represent the checkered trend, try your hand at applying it in Resene paint, on something as small as a coaster or as large as the floor. Scale is important – paint bigger squares on larger surfaces and make the squares smaller as your paintable area shrinks.
