Small spotA tiny second bathroom measuring 1.2m x 2.4m with a small bath across the back wall and a sink behind the door set itself up to be a challenging redecoration project. Wanting to utilise the space better, the bath was removed. Lifting the floorboards revealed rotting piles that were replaced before sanding and reinstalling the floorboards. Due to their poor condition the tongue and groove wall linings also required replacement. Given the small dimensions of the room and the centrally positioned window, a rectangular shower with three glass sides was installed, ensuring that light from the window wasn't blocked and that the room felt as spacious as possible. A second requirement was a butler's sink with high taps so that buckets could be filled from it but it proved impossible to find a suitable vanity that was compact enough to fit the space (while still allowing the door to open and shut) and that harmonised with the period feel of the house. A wooden cupboard from a local import store had the perfect dimensions as well as character so was converted into a vanity by drilling holes in the top and bottom for the plumbing and shortening the drawers to enable pipes to fit behind them. A Rimu-framed mirror, new glass in the window and chrome and brass fittings completed the transformation. Colourwise, Resene Buttermilk adorns the walls with Resene Golden Glow on ceilings, Resene Cream Can on the trim and Resene Stratos on the architraves.
Still a small spot, it is now a small spot with functionality and style. Inspiration gallery 2004
