Evolving palette

Building their first home in Brightwater, near Nelson, the Robinson family chose to paint the house themselves to reduce costs and to give themselves the flexibility to choose the paint colours as the house evolved.

The main bathroom, one of the last rooms to be painted, turned out to be a feature of the house. It is painted in Resene Decadence and has a continuous wave that flows around the top of the wall complemented by a handpainted basin to capture the marine theme.

There was sufficient paint left over from the bathroom to create a feature wall in Bedroom 2. Luckily the paint perfectly matched the duvet cover already bought, with the orange in the duvet and the deep purple proving a stunning combination.

Blue provides continuity throughout the house and appears in the master bedroom in the form of a rich navy Resene Bullitt feature wall, a striking backdrop for the vibrant red duvet cover.

Resene Spanish White was chosen to be the common neutral colour throughout the house, tying all rooms back to the main palette. The lounge was jazzed up with Resene Shiraz.

Staying in rental accommodation prior to building the house, Rebecca's weekends were spent making the furniture. Enrolling in night classes, she learnt how to make furniture from recycled Rimu. The kitchen table, coffee table and the double bed pictured in Bedroom 2 are all products of her design, each a natural feature in the room.
