Modernised masterpieceHaving purchased a home, the Stanbrook-Mason family sought to modernise the lounge, dining room, kitchen and master bedroom and step away from the existing, but hardly inspiring, pale blue walls with flecked carpet flooring. They lifted the carpet in the kitchen and dining room exposing Matai floorboards that were sanded and oiled. The next task was to paint the walls using Resene Drought as the primary colour, a hue which has now been used throughout the home, then accent the warm neutral with feature walls of Resene Stonewall in the lounge and Resene Tornado in the dining room. The positioning of the feature walls means that both can be seen back to back when viewed from one side of the lounge. The complexity of the colour trio blends wonderfully with the polished floorboards. The greatest challenge was the customwood flooring that had been used when the house had undergone extensions. Cleverly, this was disguised by creating a tiled effect with paint by priming the boards, then coating them with Resene Quarter Spanish White, then laying thin strips of masking tape. Black was painted over the top before the tape was lifted to create the desired tiled effect. To protect the look against the demands of foot traffic, three coats of Resene Aquaclear were applied. Along with the challenges, the project was not without a few unexpected gems, such as the Matai floorboards and the fire surround that was painted with Resene Stonewall. The decorating effort has modernised the rooms, given them clean lines and left the Stanbrook-Mason family rapt with the results.
