Fun, brave and creative

Amy feels like she bought about 50 testpots for this house. She was struggling with a starting point, then found a piece of fabric which absolutely sang to her and all of the house colours were chosen from that.

They found it so exciting to choose and end up with all of the colours they wanted. At one stage the plan was all white. The kids’ rooms had been painted in Resene Sea Fog before they were both born and they thought they'd continue that, but when it was time to confirm the colours Amy found the Facebook page Lizzy Higham Interior Styling and was so inspired to be a bit more fun, brave and creative.

‘A mustard hallway’ was the first decision to be locked in. Amy loves the colour mustard but it's not a colour that looks nice on her so the hallway was the perfect place to get her colour fix. After about eight mustard-like testpots they chose Resene Pizza. It's warm, rich and beautiful and contrasts so nicely with the Resene Alabaster doors and trims.

Amy wanted something striking underneath the breakfast bar and had to consider the hot pink table legs that would be sitting next to it. They tried a range of greens, teals and blues and decided on Resene Saratoga, it's turned out to be the perfect shade of green and is probably the colour that gets the most compliments. Both the Resene Saratoga and the Resene Rock Spray on the kitchen drawers seemed so out there when they were choosing them. Amy isn’t sure if she’s just got used to the colours, but they seem quite muted and conservative now.

Orange is Amy’s favourite colour in the world so it was definitely going to be included. She’s so glad her husband took it in his stride when they were meeting with the kitchen designer and Amy said, "what if we finished some of the kitchen drawers in orange?"

The living area, master bedroom and bathroom are Resene Alabaster. The hallway has this kind of 70s feel that's continued with the tiles in the bathroom. All of the other colours chosen were all lovely and warm so Resene Sea Fog didn't seem quite right anymore. I went into Resene in Te Awamutu and asked, "what's a white colour that's a little bit warm?" the lady showed me Resene Alabaster and it's bright and beautiful. They still have a few pictures to hang so the Resene Alabaster is the perfect backdrop and when I get two chairs, that Amy’s parents bought when they got married nearly 50 years ago, upholstered in a favourite bird fabric, the colour story will come together perfectly.

They are so thrilled with the final result and having colour around really brings joy. They were fully supported by their amazing builder Colin Downs and can't fault the finish that the painter, Colin Hodgson achieved.

Thanks to Amy.
