Nic and her husband had an old school that got shifted onto their farm in the 1950s. It was used as ‘Men’s Quarters’ for the shearing guys. The school originally operated from 1925 until 1949 about 20 kilometres away.
To keep Nic from boredom being a home bound mum she started to do up the old building with the idea to open it up as a rural Bed and Breakfast. Her husband agreed on the grounds that she stuck to a $10,000 budget! So she made a list of essentials and everything else after that could go on the ‘wish list’.
While Nic was choosing the colours, she could picture in her head the American children's story of "The Little Red School House". She based the colour choices on this – Resene Red Berry on the exterior, Resene Steel Grey on the roof and Resene White on the window joinery.
Once the painting was completed they opened it up as a Bed and Breakfast. Since then they have been blown away how much people enjoy getting off the beaten track. They get such a thrill out of sharing their little piece of paradise.
Needless to say, Nic is now getting those ‘wish list’ items ticked off while the school rings again with happiness and life.
Thanks to Nic.
