At home with art

Elizabeth and her mother looked at 39 homes in a whirlwind one day before putting in an offer on this one. The house met an impressive 23 of their 25 criteria!

Once ownership passed to Elizabeth, she completely stripped it down – rewiring it, repainting it and replacing all the curtain tracks with rods and blinds. Fittingly, one of the colours on the outside of the house, Resene Maire, happens to be an anagram for her mother’s name Marie. This is teamed with Resene Persian Red and Resene White, with COLORSTEEL® FlaxPod on the roof.

The theme for the house was that it was to be an art gallery and studio. The blinds filter light to prevent delicate paintings from fading. Mirrors and glassware reflect the light and create vistas inside the home. Everywhere you look small vignettes engage the eye. Resene Half Black White is the perfect flattering backdrop to the artwork collection.

Outside, majestic cabbage trees have grown to maturity and the garden has a Japanese theme. Outdoor cupboards have been made for tools and wood.

Visitors to the home instantly feel at ease telling Elizabeth that the house is ‘very livable’. As her friend remarked, it deserves her highest compliment that she ‘could live in it’. Admiration has come from young and old with a friend’s five year old granddaughter also admiring the ‘very pretty house’. The accent throughout is on the visual, and the spaciousness created in a small space of 80 square metres.
