4.2 hectares of land was covered in lupin, box thorn and blackberry. The McDougalls spent several years clearing the weeds and planting natives, coastal trees and shrubs to help stabilise the dunes. The site is beachfront and exposed to the prevailing westerly winds, which are laden with sand and salt.
The house was designed as a series of ‘pavilions’ which form both indoor and outdoor spaces connected by glass conservatory/corridors so from the inside you are always linked to the landscape. This also allowed the house to be built in stages, but by using the same materials and colours the house appears as a unified project.
Three primary colours – Resene Fun Blue, Resene Moon Yellow and Resene Tamarillo – were selected to contrast with the cedar and Resene Yucca painted plaster walls. These colours are echoed in the exterior plant pots and artworks.
The interior is painted white with the interior doors and concrete walls painted with the three exterior feature colours echoing the exterior colour scheme.
Thanks to the McDougall family.
