Big kid room time

The Simpson family knew it was time for the very light, neutral nursery to be upgraded to a ‘big kid room’ for their son’s second birthday.

The curtains were installed for the original nursery so it was important to choose a colour that worked with them but also gave the room some personality. Tessa wanted something masculine that created a cosy feel and would be suitable as her son gets older. The room is quite small but has a lot of natural light and beautiful sunlight late in the afternoon. Because of this Tessa wasn’t too scared to go with a really deep shade. As soon as she saw a swatch of Resene Avalanche she knew it would be perfect and it tied in beautifully with the existing curtains.

The trims and ceiling were painted in Resene Alabaster to offset the dark blue walls. They look really crisp in contrast.

Tessa had an old wire/wooden wall shelf that needed a spruce up and decided to paint it using Resene Black to create some depth on the wall. The furniture surrounding it is white, so the black balances out the white nicely.

A favourite part of the room is the reading corner. The quote on the wall is by Dr Seuss created using individual letter decals.

All of the furniture in the room is from Mocka. Most of the items used for styling are from small businesses run by some very clever mums, even down to the dinosaur duvet cover. Tessa injected colour into the room through the art prints, which really pop against the dark walls.

After much hard work, this room is a fun interesting space to spend time in.
