Coolest room in the house

This room was created for their son. He spends quite a bit of time indoors and deserves a cool space to chill out or play. It was a seven year project, but most of the coolest parts have just been completed.

Star wars themed bedroom boys room

Angela wanted to update the mural that was already painted earlier so they added the volcano with the beautiful lava painted by the children. The volcano, lava bombs and fuel pump were painted by Angela. They also replaced the natural timber window sills and painted them this time for better longevity and painted the doors. Resene Magnetic Magic paint on the road on the mural (lower right by the stone wall) means it can be interactive.

The room was originally painted in Resene Half Pearl Lusta but the update included changing the walls to Resene Double Alabaster to match the rest of the house and brighten it up.

There is a spaceship inside the wardrobe with a curved mirrored ceiling and lots of stuff to play with including a Resene Magnetic Magic paint finish. Who needs a wardrobe?!

The bookcase, desk and fuel pump pipe all do double duty as grab rails/supports for Lincoln so he doesn't have to use his equipment in his room. They did not want medical looking grab rails. The bookcase needed to be pre-distressed and the other areas have an industrial feel to them which can take the knocks.

The biggest challenge was trying to get it finished while doing so much else. With it taking so long though paint technology improved and things just kept getting better (e.g. Resene Zylone Sheen low VOC paint). Window sills did not like getting damp with natural oils/wax so were replaced this year and painted with Resene Lustacryl to perform better.

The windowsills and doors are Resene Licorice to match the curtain fabric which is a beautiful soft dark blue. The bookcase is Resene Silver Tree to complement the Resene Licorice and the mural's myriad of colours. The obvious colour for a space station fuel pump is grey with black Resene Lustacryl. Angela likes how she can just go buy more of the ‘black’ as needed as it is in several other parts of the house too.

Not surprising the children love this room. Designing and painting the mural was great fun but now his sister has to have one!
