This room was to be the new baby girl’s room. Keri had been really sick for much of her pregnancy, so painting and designing this room was a really positive, bright point in preparation for her arrival.
The Clarke family wanted to create a beautiful, soothing space for her, but also one that aligned with their desire for a well-designed, non-‘cutesy’ space. Keri has an aversion to children’s rooms filled with cartoons and bright colours.
They found some gorgeous animal photographs that served as a jumping off point, and chose soft feminine colours. Their hope for their daughter is that she is proud of her femininity but also very strong. This inspired the idea of contrasting the softness with geometric shapes.
Keri is a graphic designer, so she put the triangle idea into InDesign to get the measurements, and spent hours taping it out in hope it would work well. Keri described herself as a little fastidious, and her husband kept saying “Are you SURE we don’t just want to do wallpaper? What about just one big triangle?”, but after two days of work (and lots of patience on his part, as well as help from Keri’s mother in law), the wall was complete. The colours used were Resene Pale Slate, Resene Blossom and Resene Moonbeam.
The Clarkes have been so pleased with the result, and in those early days when Keri was sleep deprived, nursing and changing nappies during the night, she drew comfort and peace from this beautiful room.
Thanks to Keri
