This was a new extension to a 100year old rural cottage. Adding a fourth bedroom and ensuite dramatically changed the way the house was being used and while all the building work was brand new, Celia was very conscious of the feel that had to match the vintage of the rest of the house.
Celia and Al are in the process of modernising the entire house but still with a country feel appropriate to its use as a working farm house. With the bathroom in particular, Celia didn't want white on white on white, or an ugly melamine vanity, so they sourced recycled matai floorboards to match the house, rimu skirting and a beautifully shaped oak dresser, that needed restoring and then converting into a vanity.
Celia also made feature light fittings from old power pole parts and new Edison bulbs, as there was nothing in the lighting shops that suited the vintage of the house or use of the room. The walls were clad with Hardigroove® to give the appearance of tongue and groove, with better waterproofing and durability than raw timber, and topped with a dado rail that gave a natural boundary to do something fun with the wall paint.
The entire room has been painted with Resene Quarter Merino enamel. Then Celia has painstakingly measured and worked out the precise stripe width so each wall ends on an even full stripe, masked it and overpainted it with Resene Polo Blue. Inevitably the masking wasn't perfect, so a lap around all the stripes hand painting any blemishes out created the striking finished look. Celia chose Resene Polo Blue because she didn't want the well-used duck egg blue and the house wasn't really suited to going bright cobalt blue either, so it needed to be a bright colour, but not too wishy washy. The same Resene Polo Blue was also used on the feature bedhead wall to bring out the contrast in the fabric headboard.
