Life projectCathy's home has become her life's project; turning a very uninteresting piece of kiwi mid-20th-century 'knock-up job'' into something more resembling a home to her liking. As anyone who is interested in living/design, Cathy was initially influenced by European style, in particular earth-building (especially the colours!) Since those days, holidays in New Caledonia and working with Pasifika people, she's proudly Aotearoa/Pacific focussed. She has also had to recognise and work to financial constraints. However, she still retains her love for colours that express sunshine, warmth and joy. This is the third time the house has been painted since 1987, and with pergolas in place this year, there is finally some sun-protection for the scorching sun-trap position. The weatherboard colour has minimally changed since 1987 and was specifically chosen to neutralise the odder quirks of the building and show off foliage (sadly neglected through this last building project). The choice of joinery colour has evolved over the years. Cathy likes the little pops of colour on the house that echo similar colours in the garden. The main weatherboards are finished in Resene Zorba, with bargeboards in Resene Ship Grey, eaves and gable apex in Resene Tide, window and door flashings in Resene Squirrel, window sills and French doors in Resene Prairie Sand, window casements in Resene Tuscany (with a small amount of Resene Squirrel added to make it earthier) and Resene Tiri woodstain on the pergola. Many visitors comment on Cathy's colour choices, some friends even bring their visitors to see it. However, more important to Cathy: she loves it! It makes her heart sing to arrive home. This project is a slow moving one - one outside wall per year and the interior is still a work in progress.
