Pop of colourThe Giblin's 1960s home has lovely curved wall features and blonded timber joinery. The kitchen was largely original, incorporating the laundry. They decided to move the laundry out, replacing it with a cafe-style breakfast area. They kept the integrity of the kitchen joinery where possible as they loved the curved cupboard corners and general layout. By finishing pine plywood with Resene Colorwood Rock Salt stain on some cupboard doors they reproduced the blonded look elsewhere in the house. Painting selected doors with Resene Flashback, Resene Moonbeam and Resene Alibi gave the neutral palette a pop up of colour. The stained areas were finished in Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane to provide ongoing protection to the surface. They completely replaced the underbench cupboards and benchtop. The joiners used blonded ply for the drawers and cupboard fronts and crafted a curved cupboard to complement the original. The kitchen trim was painted Resene Solitaire. They carried the colours into the new breakfast area. The bench seat upholstery matches the kitchen and they found an original 60s yellow Formica table with chrome legs that picks up the Resene Moonbeam colouring. For the ceiling they blonded ply. As a fun finishing touch, they turned an original laundry drawer into a frame for a piece of funky art that all the family contributed to.
