Wellness corners: Taking health outdoors

Decks and courtyards are no longer neglected corners for a BBQ and a few chairs; they’re stylish extensions of our interiors.

The latest outdoor trend: ‘wellness decks’. The desire for spaces that allow for total relaxation at home has surged in recent years. Enter the wellness deck – a dedicated outdoor area designed not just for entertaining, but for fostering fantastic mental health. Reach for moody hues like Resene Cape Palliser and Resene Karaka to set a tranquil scene outdoors.

Decks have long been seen as spaces for social gatherings, weekend barbecues and spots to soak up sunshine. Our view of outdoor spaces has always been a little more practical, compared to how designers have transformed the humble deck in recent times. The concept of an outdoor zone designed with wellness in mind is relatively new. But our understanding of self-care has evolved over time; the stress of modern life, coupled with a growing awareness of the importance of mental health, has led many of us to rethink how outdoor spaces can contribute to our wellbeing.

Whether it's a spot for yoga, meditation or just a quiet moment with a book, the wellness deck aims to provide an environment that creates a sense of calm. The trend forms part of a broader movement that sees our outdoor spaces as extensions of our homes designed with the same level of attention to detail as our interiors. Not everyone has a sprawling garden or large courtyard space to work with, but that shouldn’t deter you from creating a wellness-inspired outdoor zone. Even small balconies or courtyards can become sanctuaries of peace and relaxation with a little creativity. The key to designing a wellness deck in a compact space is to maximise the potential of what you have.

We created a cosy, retreat-like courtyard cocooned in natural wood and deep green tones. To prevent the space from feeling too heavy, we mixed lighter tones like Resene Quarter Karaka and Resene Cape Palliser with Resene Karaka and Resene Woodsman Decking Oil Stain in Resene Tiri for a layered effect. Resene Tiri, a modern deep grey stain, sets the tone on the courtyard’s flooring. This wood stain finish adds colour to the timber while allowing its natural grain to show through. The light colour feels modern and creates a great neutral foundation to build the rest of our design from. Deep tones feel very chic outdoors and there is something about a dark colour palette that calls us in to unwind and embrace silence.

Paint: Walls and screen painted in Resene Karaka, shelf in Resene Quarter Karaka, bench seat in Resene Cape Palliser, decking in Resene Woodsman Decking Oil Stain in Resene Tiri, wall light in Resene FX Faux Rust Effect and pots in Resene Scrub, Resene Quarter Karaka, Resene Pendragon and Resene Cape Palliser.

We painted our walls and a screen divider in Resene Karaka. This deep rainforest green envelops the space, creating the intimate, retreat-like atmosphere we’re after. Whether you’re meditating, reading or enjoying a coffee, Resene Karaka sets the soothing mood. A wall divider in the same colour as surrounding walls is a great choice for small deck areas, as it allows for the space to feel more expansive and private. It acts as a subtle boundary, creating different zones for relaxation or privacy from neighbours without visually overwhelming the area.

The monochromatic approach also helps the divider to fade into the background, making the courtyard feel less cramped or crowded. This simplicity can make the space feel more serene and harmonious, as the focus remains on the overall layout and design rather than any one element. It also allows the other features of the courtyard, like plants, furniture or decorative items, to stand out more.

For a softer contrast, we used the earthy sage green Resene Quarter Karaka on shelving against the walls. This muted green adds a little brightness to the courtyard while maintaining our overall calming vibe. It's a perfect spot for plants or candles – things that will further enhance the tranquil environment. We added small plant pots painted in Resene Cape Palliser.

Resene Cape Palliser also brings our bench seat to life, a wild parched ochre that offers plenty of warmth. The hue not only complements the deck’s green tones but also creates a sense of earthiness. It’s the sort of colour that invites you to sit down and linger.

Incorporating a few carefully chosen accessories can also help set the tone. Linen cushions and cosy throws bring softness to an outdoor zone. Lighting is another essential component. Opt for soft, ambient lighting, like wall lights or lanterns, which can enhance the calm atmosphere without overwhelming the senses. We incorporated a wall light in Resene FX Faux Rust Effect. The oxidised metal finish creates a soft, atmospheric glow that enhances our sense of tranquility, especially in the evening. A good addition of lighting complements the organic elements in a courtyard setting and works to set the mood for relaxation.

We added larger patterned pot plants in Resene Scrub, a lichen and moss mid green, Resene Quarter Karaka and Resene Pendragon, a warm, ciabatta tan, for a garden-feel. Greenery is often what makes a soothing outdoor space, so don’t hold back on your addition of plants. Plants are what help us recharge and really turn a deck into something special.
