NZ House & Garden, Resene / Colour expert
Colour is the ultimate mood-influencer says designer Marlene Hudson.
Rotorua-based interior designer Marlene Hudson believes that the need for unique spaces is essential, and that Resene paint helps with that goal.

Why do you love working with Resene colour?
Colour has the ability to influence and support a person’s mood and have an immense effect on our wellbeing. It can be energising, uplifting, moody or relaxing. To engage within a space because it feels joyful enhances the experience and encourages you to spend more time there. As we move through the various stages of life, we become exposed to more and more digital noise through advertising and work so we want our homes to be somewhere we can express ourselves fully, be it uplifting or relaxing.
Resene has a wonderful range of colours and inspires with its fashion colour fandeck.
What effect do you think paint colour has on an interior?
Homes filled with colour, texture and pattern can bring joy and release dopamine. Expressing your personality is not limited to clothes or jewellery – we have expanded self-expression into our homes and workplaces, as we should.
Do you have any advice on developing a colour scheme?
My process is to dive deeply into finding out what brings my clients joy – what hobbies and activities they do, what collections they have, the places they like to be. I also take cues from the home’s architectural features so that the era and style is respected by the colour palette. Simply copying and pasting a look from a magazine or showhome doesn’t offer any insight on the individuals who live there. The braver you are, the better the interior and the more you feel connected to the space.
What are your current favourite Resene colours?
I gravitate towards colours found in my surroundings. Resene Deep Teal is a gorgeous deep colour between green and blue, like the watery depths at Lake Okareka. It helps still my mind after a busy day. Resene Dusted Blue is a yummy blend of blue and grey, easy to decorate around. Resene Double Merino is a warm and soft white which isn’t stark or too grey.
