Why do you love working with colour?

Because it evokes emotion. A vibrant colour can instantly lift a mood, whereas a dark colour will envelop you, making you feel relaxed, comforted and calm. Colour doesn’t always have to be striking and bold – greys and taupes can be just as useful at creating drama and intrigue in a home.

Do you have any golden rules or tips for using colour?

Don’t be afraid of colour. Paint is, hands down, the best medium for instantly changing the look and feel of a room – it also doesn’t need to be permanent as you can always paint over it! I love moody tones, especially in living areas and bedrooms, as they feel restful and comforting. For darker coloured walls, use Resene SpaceCote Flat, which creates a soft, velvety finish as it reflects less light. Proper preparation is important so repair holes, remove old wallpaper and treat old stained plasterboard with Resene Sureseal. Resene paint isn’t just for walls. Try painting a planter pot, a chest of drawers or photo frames for a wee pop of colour.

What are your three favourite Resene colours?

Resene Coast – it’s rich and dreamy, elegant and sophisticated and much like a neutral, it pairs with just about any colour. I love to use it with plants, rattan, marble and beautiful metallics.

Resene Black White – there is a reason this colour is so popular. It’s a classic and easy-to-live-with white, and is the best colour for showcasing art on your walls.

Resene I Do – pink has long been a favourite colour of mine but when it comes to adorning walls I don’t do bubblegum shades. Resene I Do is a gritty pink – edgy and sophisticated and almost borders on grey. It is a very calm and relaxing colour.
