A penchant for pattern

Nothing makes an impact in a room like a fearless black and white pattern.

Nothing makes an impact in a room like a fearless black and white pattern. Make it bold and unapologetic and you are bang on trend; geometric patterns have taken centre stage in the interior design world recently, particularly in the form of feature walls. Thick, stamp-style painted prints and over-sized motifs are adorning living spaces. Channel this trend on a living room wall with contrasting hues Resene Albescent White and Resene Night Magic.

Geometric patterns have long graced architecture and interiors, the key to magnificent structures like the Parthenon in Greece and the Alhambra in Spain. From intricate tilework in Morocco to symmetrically precise designs of Japanese architecture, geometry is a universal language of aesthetics. Bold and striking colours often accompany geometric patterns, drawing the eye. The effect of strong geometric patterns in rooms is undeniable. They inject character, depth and visual interest whether the patterns feature on the walls, floors, ceilings or furniture. Geometric patterns create focal points that evoke emotion. A ‘more is more’ design approach is reigning supreme, challenging conventional design norms. This approach celebrates fearless experimentation with shapes, patterns and textures – often all layered together.

Amidst a kaleidoscope of hues, it’s classic colours that have made a triumphant return. Black and white rule, lending timeless elegance to interiors. These achromatic tones (when used in geometric patterns) exude a sense of sophistication reminiscent of bygone eras. Black and white as a colour pairing – particularly in pattern – will long stand as an emblem of modernity and chicness.

This living space exudes contemporary flair and boldness, the feature wall the room’s main pull. The mural in abstract geometric shapes adds an adventurous and artsy touch, but still feels very liveable/versatile due to the colour palette. Resene Albescent White is crisp and clean against the moody, velvety Resene Night Magic. The juxtaposition of these hues creates a striking contrast, enhancing the visual intrigue of the space. We left plenty of light space in between the pattern to ensure the room doesn’t feel too dark.

To create an achromatic geometric wall:

Floorboards stain colour washed in Resene Breathe Easy keep the lounge feeling bright and airy. The colour also has a bit of warmth in it to keep the room from feeling too cold. We focused on pops of green in terms of accessories – a coffee table in Resene Olive Green and a side table in Resene Paddock infuse the space with a little more organic warmth. These soft shades of green complement Resene Albescent White and Resene Night Magic, adding a refreshing pop of colour without overpowering the room.

Incorporating green accessories like a tray in Resene Olive Green and a lamp in Resene Green Spring further enhances the friendliness and personality of the space. These accents echo the natural world, and add a touch more depth to the room. Houseplants are your best friends in terms of adding texture and life to any room. Opt for large-leafed plants like Elephant Ears or Monsteras to complement bold geometric patterns. Their lush greenery softens the angularity of the patterns, creating a harmonious balance between nature and design.

Adding tables, soft furnishings and plants to a living space will keep a room feeling dynamic, but to avoid overwhelming a space (especially when a bold feature wall is your star), always consider:

Whether embracing a 'more is more' ethos or adhering to minimalist principles, geometric patterns infuse spaces with personality and allure. Perhaps most importantly, they stand the test of time.
