storage solutions

From Habitat plus - kids' spaces

For some, it’s hard to imagine that it’s possible to have both kids and a clean house. But in fact, that can be the case – and there's no catch either, like you being the one who has to pick up the toys!

What you will need are some strategic storage solutions that will make sure your child’s belongings have proper places where they belong so that they can keep them organised when playtime is over.

Blue bedroom with bookcase

Colourful furniture

Bedroom: Build or purchase a creatively shaped bookcase like this one and it can double as a dollhouse as well as storage when playtime is over. Walls in Resene Bunting, floor in Resene Sea Fog, bookshelf in Resene Hammerhead, box shelves in Resene Breathless, Resene Jalapeno and Resene Hammerhead, pendant lamp in Resene Jalapeno, storage boxes/crates on bookshelf in Resene Breathless, Resene Bunting, Resene Hammerhead and Resene Jalapeno, plant pot in Resene Bunting, bedside table in Resene Breathless with drawer front in Resene Wallpaper Collection LL-05-07-4.

Drawers: Painting functional furniture with a fun design can add some real character to your child’s space. Dresser in Resene Alabaster (outside) with painted triangles in (clockwise from top left) Resene Bismark, Resene Thumbs Up (try Resene Rob Roy), Resene Truffle, Resene Permanent Green and Resene Alabaster, wall in Resene Sea Fog with colour block in Resene Fast Forward (try Resene San Juan), floor in Resene Truffle and noticeboard in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Noir over two coats of Resene FX Magnetic Magic.

Top tip: Resene FX Crackle effect can be applied over any colour to create a crackled surface effect so you can see your basecoat colour through cracks in your topcoat. Try it on headboards, desktops and frames.

The solution that’ll work best for you and your young ones will vary depending on age, needs and the space you have available, but some ideas include:

Of course, painting your storage baskets, bins and other tidying tools in colours to complement the room's colour scheme means they’ll look more like décor and add to the room’s design rather than detracting from it.

Hangers: Painting your storage solution with a chalk-friendly finish, such as Resene FX Chalkboard Paint or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, can turn it into a surface for creativity – or to help you or the kids remember what goes inside. Upper wall in Resene FX Blackboard Paint with lower wall in Resene Green Spring, floor in Resene Secrets, hook rack in Resene Rivergum, toy box in Resene Rivergum with lid in Resene Secrets and chair in Resene Paddock.

Crates: Pick up some low profile crates that can slide under your child’s bed for stowing away small items and paint them using Resene testpots in colours that coordinate with their bedding. Floor in Resene Fast Forward (try Resene San Juan), large crate in Resene Hive (try Resene Bright Spark) and small crate in Resene Sorbet (try Resene Dust Storm).

Bedroom: Ladders are great for storing extra blankets, and you can never go wrong with beautiful baskets. Wall in Resene Eighth Joss with tongue-and-groove panelling in Resene Finch, floor in Resene Digeridoo, headboard, bedside table, ladder and canopy support in Resene Redwood, baskets and lidded dish in Resene Fahrenheit, tall vase in Resene Black Forest, medium vase in Resene Toffee, small vase in Resene Twine and DIY air dry clay animal masks in Resene Groundbreaker, Resene Doeskin, Resene Black Forest, Resene Hairy Heath and Resene Sambuca.

Top tip: Aspiring authors and artists take note – you can transform a wall or a hard surface into a writing or doodle wall using Resene FX Blackboard Paint and Resene FX Chalkboard Paint. Or use Resene FX Write-on Wall Paint to turn any painted wall into a whiteboard which can be wiped clean.
