Clear the decks

Project ideas and inspiration from Good magazine

Have fun outdoors creating space and bouncing sunlight.

Spring is when we spruce up our outside spaces in readiness for some quality outdoor time. Almost anything can be successfully painted if you use quality paint products and correctly prepare surfaces beforehand. After a clean with Resene Timber & Deck Wash, we used Resene Lumbersider low sheen for the deck and path, as its waterborne resin base provides maximum durability outdoors. Resene Lumbersider is also formulated to adhere to fresh timber, so often needs no undercoat or primer.

How to paint an old tired outside deck

The concrete path had a worn surface with some mould, so first needed treating with Resene Moss & Mould Killer before being painted. Once treated and dry, we sealed the concrete with one coat of Resene Walk-on thinned 10% with water and let it dry overnight before topcoating with Resene Walk-on. If you prefer a seamless finish from deck and path, Resene Walk-on can be used for both.

The outdoor area caught the beautiful afternoon sun but its tired brown vibe made it seem unnecessarily small and gloomy. To maximise the light, the deck was painted in Resene Quarter Surrender, a light silver-grey. This was teamed with the very popular near-white shade of Resene Alabaster for the table and stools. Deck rails and garden walls in Resene Regent Grey smartly defined the area’s sides.

The area was completely transformed by the combined paintwork – with a fresh new look, greater sense of spaciousness and bouncing light. Classic French bistro chairs, Mooon! lamp and throw – all in the colour of sunshine – completed the celebratory mood.
