Red bench

It’s easy to create this vibrant red bench with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 47

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 65mm screws, 300mm x 50mm timber (approx 2m), 75mm x 100mm timber (approx 1m), 50mm x 50mm timber (approx 1m), filler, paintbrush, pencil, putty knife or similar, PVA glue, ruler, Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Poppy, Resene Quick Dry, sandpaper, saw, screwdriver, tape measure.

To get the look: Mark painted the floor with Resene Walk-on flooring and paving paint tinted to Resene Coriander.

Other ideas: For a bright orange effect, paint the bench with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Adrenalin.

Step 1
Step one
From the 300mm x 50mm timber, cut two pieces measuring 400mm and one piece measuring 1100mm. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Cut the 75mm x 100mm timber and the 50mm x 50mm timber into 900mm lengths. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 3
Step three
Attach the 75mm x 100mm piece of timber to the centre of the larger piece of 300mm x 50mm timber, as shown. Fix with PVA glue and 65mm screws, slightly countersinking the screw heads.

Attach the two remaining pieces of 300mm x 50mm timber, as shown. Again, fix with PVA glue and 65mm screws, slightly countersinking the screw heads.
Step 5

Attach the piece of 50mm x 50mm timber, as shown. Once again, fix with PVA glue and 65mm screws, slightly countersinking the screw heads.
Step 6

Fill the screw holes with filler and, once dry, lightly sand smooth.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the bench and allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Paint the bench with two coats of Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Poppy, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
