Kitchen cupboard

Turn an old wooden cupboard into a colourful retro kitchen cupboard with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 17

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: an old varnished wooden cupboard, sandpaper, screwdriver, paintbrushes (including a medium artists’ brush), paint roller and tray. Resene Quick Dry, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster, Resene Bullseye and Resene Galliano,

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Vitra and the skirting with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Other ideas: Create a smart monochrome look by using Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster, Resene Nero and Resene Tuna.

Step 1

Carefully remove the cupboard doors.
Step 2

Lightly sand any old varnish to provide a ‘key’ and remove any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 3

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to any unvarnished parts of the cupboard, and allow two hours to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the varnished parts of the cupboard, and allow two hours to dry.
Step 5

Apply two coats of Resene Alabaster to the inside of the cupboard, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Using the paint roller, apply two coats of Resene Alabaster to the back of the doors and outside of the cupboard. Allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Galliano to the front and edges of the cupboard doors and two coats of Resene Alabaster to the door handles. Allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Paint the middle shelf with two coats of Resene Bullseye, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Replace the cupboard doors.
