Dazzling deckchair

Turn a plain kitset deckchair into an eye-catching piece of garden furniture using a bold Resene red.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 05

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: a kitset canvas deckchair (ours came from Mitre 10 Mega), screwdriver, a clean cloth, sandpaper and paintbrush. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and Resene Lumbersider to Resene Bright Red.

To get the look: Mark painted the background shed wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Curious Blue.

Other ideas: For a cool, elegant look paint the deckchair frame with Resene Colonial White.

Remove the kitset deckchair from the packaging.
Step 2

Carefully take off the protective cardboard covers from the deckchair legs.
Step 3

Unscrew the plastic leg brackets, as shown, and put to one side.
Step 4

Lightly sand the entire deckchair frame to provide a ‘key’. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the deckchair frame and allow two hours to dry.
Step 6

Apply two coats of Resene Bright Red to the deckchair frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Screw the plastic leg brackets back into position, as shown.
Step 8
Step eight
Following manufacturer’s instructions, thread the canvas seat into position on the deckchair frame, fixing in place with the dowel provided.
