Splatter chair

Transform an old chair into a work of modern art with the help of a few Resene testpots.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 03

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: an old painted or varnished wooden chair, a clean cloth, paintbrushes (including a medium artists’ brush) and sandpaper. Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene Aquaclear satin and Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Nite Life. Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Bowie, Resene Desire and Resene Outrageous.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Knock Out.

Other ideas: Create a cool blue combination using Resene Anchor, Resene Aquarius and Resene Elvis over a basecoat of Resene True Blue.

Step 1
Step one
Remove the upholstered seat and lightly sand the chair frame to provide a ‘key’. Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 2
Step two
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface sealer to the chair frame and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 3
Step three
Paint the chair frame with two coats of Resene Nite Life, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Using an artists’ brush, dribble and splatter Resene Desire over the chair frame, as shown.
Step 5
Step five
Repeat step four using Resene Outrageous.
Step 6
Step six
Repeat step four using Resene Bowie. Allow to dry thoroughly (a minimum of two hours).
Step 7
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Replace the upholstered seat.
